Overview

Sump pump installation for Barrie basements

Barrie Quality Waterproofing does sump pump installation in Barrie from the floor up. Sometimes that means sawing a brand-new pit into the slab, sometimes dropping a fresh pump into an old one, adding a battery backup or rerouting a discharge line out to the lawn. Any pit we dig meets the Ontario Building Code: 750 mm deep, 0.25 m² across, and a lid kids can't lift. Our crew installs them in Barrie and nearby Ontario towns, including Innisfil, Orillia, Midhurst, Angus, Alliston, Bradford, Wasaga Beach, Collingwood, Midland and Oro-Medonte.

For a basement whose drain runs to a pit, the sump pump is the backup goalie: it may not see action for months, then the March melt or an August cloudburst hits and it has to be sharp. If it fails, the pit spills over within hours. So nearly every pump we install comes with a check valve and a battery backup, and the discharge goes somewhere it can't loop back to the wall.

Types of Sump Pump Work We Do

From a quick swap to a whole new system, these are the sump jobs our crew does around Barrie.

  • New Sump Pit Installation

This is for houses that never had a pit, or that are getting an interior drain. We saw the floor, dig below the drain line, drop in a sealed liner and connect the weeping tile. The concrete around the new pit goes back smooth and level.

  • Sump Pump Replacement

Seven to ten years is a good run for a pump. Grinding noises, nonstop cycling or dead silence mean it's time. We pull the old one, set a submersible pump in the same pit with a new check valve, and test it before we leave. Our crew does most swaps in 2 hours.

  • Battery Backup Sump Pump

Think backup goalie. A battery backup is a second pump that shares the pit and runs off a battery when the power drops or the first pump quits. Honestly, there's no cheaper flood insurance for a basement. An alarm sounds when it takes over.

  • Sump Pump Discharge Redirection

If the discharge empties right beside the house, the same water just soaks back down to your weeping tile and around it goes again. We carry it at least two metres out, or to ground that falls away. Inside Barrie, taking it off the sanitary sewer can qualify for a rebate.

  • Foundation Drain Disconnection

Some older Barrie houses have the weeping tile plumbed into the sanitary sewer. We cap that line off, put in a pit and pump, and send the water out to the lawn instead. Disconnect to Protect, the City's program, covers 75% of the cost, up to $2,000.

  • Sump Pit Covers and Alarms

An uncovered pit is a hazard for kids and pets, and it breathes damp air into the basement. Our crew fits sealed, child-proof lids and a high-water alarm that shouts before the pit spills over.

Pricing

How much does sump pump installation cost in Barrie?

Most sump pump installation jobs in Barrie cost $995 to $2,995, going by prices local contractors published in 2026. Putting a new pump into a pit you already have sits near the bottom of that range. Sawing a fresh pit into the floor and adding a battery backup sits near the top.

The new-pit range is Dryshield's published 2026 Barrie price. Swap and backup ranges are what our crew typically charges for standard pumps. Rebate terms are the City of Barrie's, from barrie.ca (2026). Add HST.

Signs your sump pump needs attention

Check the pit every March before the melt. Call us when you see any of these:

  • The pump hums, but no water leaves the pit.
  • It runs nonstop, even in dry weather.
  • It clicks on and off every few seconds.
  • Rust, a stuck float or a pit half full of silt and stones.
  • The pump is more than ten years old.

Barrie's Disconnect to Protect rebate

Barrie wants groundwater kept out of the sanitary sewer, and it pays you to help. If your sump discharge or your foundation drain runs into the sewer today, the City covers 75% of the cost of changing it: up to $200 to redirect a sump, up to $2,000 for a full foundation drain disconnection with a new pump. Look up the current terms on barrie.ca before you book anyone.

Picking a pump

In most Barrie basements, a 1/3 or 1/2 horsepower submersible pump does the job. Going bigger backfires: an oversized pump drains the pit in seconds, then stops, then starts again, and wears itself out. We watch how fast your pit fills on the first visit and size the pump to that.

How it works

Sump pump installation, step by step

A new pit takes our crew about a day. A pump swap takes a couple of hours.

  1. Check the inflow

See how fast water comes in and where it drains.

  2. Cut and dig

Cut the floor and dig the pit below the drain level.

  3. Set pump and valve

Install the liner, pump, check valve and backup.

  4. Discharge and test

Run the line outside and test with water.

Questions

Sump pump FAQ

How long does a sump pump last?

Figure 7 to 10 years for a pump in a Barrie basement, less if it works hard every April. Our advice: every March, tip a bucket of water into the pit and watch it run. Swap the pump while it still works, not the morning you find it sitting in water.

Do I need a battery backup sump pump?

We put one in almost every basement with a sump, and here's why. Spring thunderstorms and ice storms knock out the power right when the pit is filling fastest. A battery pump takes over on its own, and an alarm lets you know it's carrying the load.

Where should my sump pump drain in Barrie?

Not into the sanitary sewer; Barrie doesn't allow it. Send the discharge out onto your lawn, at least two metres from the house, or to a low spot that falls away. If it currently goes into the sewer, the City's Disconnect to Protect program pays part of the cost of moving it.

How deep does a sump pit have to be?

At least 750 mm deep and 0.25 m² across under the Ontario Building Code, with a lid built so a child can't pull it off. We set every pit a bit below the weeping tile, so the drain empties into it instead of sitting full.

Why does my sump pump run all the time?

Usually one of four things. The water table is high during the melt. Or the float switch is stuck. Or there's no check valve, so water runs back down. Or the discharge dumps right back beside the house. We check all four on the free inspection.
